Counseling and Mental Health Center

  • Our Longhorn Wellness Center team hosted events for Suicide Prevention Week Sept. 16–20. In partnership with the HealthPoint Employee Assistance Program, we held an event during this week to help faculty and staff learn how to prevent burnout and how to engage in self-care.   • The newly-renovated Longhorn Wellness Center, a unit of the Counseling and Mental Health Center and University Health Services, opened on Sept. 5. Check out the photos.

New Student Services

  • Horns Helping Horns, a program that assists financially-independent students, held its first meeting on Sept. 16. Texas Exes presented information about how to network.
  • Our office in partnership with the Transfer-Year Experience Program hosted a Pizza + Star Party for transfer students on Sept. 11.
  • To kick off Orientation Advisor (OA) recruitment, we hosted Orientation Advisor Homecoming on Sept. 10. We celebrated the success of this summer’s orientation season and informed orientation advisors of ways they can assist with recruitment efforts.

aUsTinite program

  • Our department’s aUsTinite program, which is part of our off-campus initiative, held a SoCo Search on Sept. 4. Twenty students attended the event and learned about the Capital Metro transit system and explored South Congress Avenue. New Student Services will be holding more aUsTinite programs throughout the school year to help off-campus students stay connected to UT Austin and explore the city in which they live.

Office of the Dean of Students

  • Student organizations have until Oct. 22 to attend a Safety Education with our Sorority and Fraternity Life team. Last month, the team held New Member Educator Training for 72 student leaders, New Member Orientation for 1,400 new sorority and fraternity community members, and Safety Education training for over 300 student organizations. 
  • Our Leadership and Ethics Institute staff are holding free leadership development workshops. These workshops are open and free to all students. Full workshop descriptions, and the required RSVP link are available on our website.

 Leadership Education and Progress

  • Our Leadership and Ethics Institute team is currently recruiting students for Leadership Education and Progress (LEAP). Through this short, award-winning program, students develop skills and discover campus resources to support their success on campus. Registration ends Oct. 16.

CoachUT

  • Our Leadership and Ethics Institute staff are recruiting student employees in the Division of Student Affairs for the CoachUT pilot program. Through this initiative, students receive five meetings with a leadership development coach to help them identify and meet their personal goals. Email utlei@austin.utexas.edu for more information.

Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

  • Our office has trademarked living the Longhorn life, the foundational message that will be used in most public-facing communications. This is the platform that gives our work an identity on campus and beyond.

  • The Sharon H. Justice Leadership Scholarship Application is now open to juniors or seniors who display exemplary campus leadership. The deadline is Oct. 22.
  • Our office invites new members of the Division team to attend True Colors® Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-noon, 1:30–3:30 p.m., or Oct. 17, 1:30–3:30 p.m. Staff can register via UT Learn.
  • Dr. Lilly and Division leadership will host New Staff Welcome on Oct. 1 to share how our nine departments influence our students in living the Longhorn life. See the photos.

ConstitUTion Day

ConstitUTion Day Twitter giveaway items

  • In celebration of the signing of the United States Constitution, we held a Twitter trivia contest for students on Sept. 17 and partnered with Student Government on a voter registration table. 
  • Our Development team met with alumni, supporters and new Longhorn parents at the Texas Stampede on Sept. 13–14 in Houston hosted by President Gregory L. Fenves and Vice President and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte.

Recreational Sports

  • Come tailgate with RecSports! Enjoy complimentary food, music, a cornhole tournament and cash bar two hours prior to the Texas vs. Kansas game on Oct. 19, Gregory Gym Aquatic Complex. Please RSVP by Oct. 16.

Functional Training Space at Recreational Sports Center

  • We added new functional training spaces at Gregory Gym and the Recreational Sports Center featuring equipment designed to improve core strength, balance and cardiovascular health.
  • We launched a student staff development initiative, Team RecSports, to help our students thrive in the workplace and build career skills. A series of career management workshops will be offered to student staff this fall.

  • Staff hosted an informal Alumni Happy Hour at the ABGB (Austin Beer Garden Brewing) on Sept. 19. These friends of RecSports visited with our full-time staff and reconnected with teammates. View photos.
  • Party on the Plaza, a Longhorn Welcome signature event, drew thousands of students who enjoyed the festivities and the opportunity to visit over 400 student organizations. A record-breaking $13,468 was raised for the Student Emergency Fund. See the photos.

Texas Parents

  • The Texas Parents Ambassadors Council meets on Oct. 25 to welcome new council members and discuss ways to continue serving the university. At the meeting’s luncheon, we will announce the recipients of the Student Organization Grants and Mike Wacker Award.
  • Our team is gearing up for Family Weekend, Oct. 25–27. We invite departments and campus organizations to sign up to host a table at the Great Texas Showcase. Registration opens Oct. 7.

The Center for Students in Recovery

  • Mark your calendar for our next SOAR (Seminar on Addiction and Recovery), Oct. 17, 2-3 p.m., Bellmont 222, with Dr. Abena Mackall on “Recovery Support within the Prison System.” Our monthly speaker series returned on Sept. 19 with therapist Rachel Wulburt, LMSW, who presented “Storytelling in Recovery.”
  • Recovery Ally Trainings are available by RSVP or by request through our website. We hosted our first training of the semester on Sept. 25.
  • We have launched Longhorns for Recovery, a new weekly fun, sober social hour for students in recovery and campus recovery allies, Fridays at 4 p.m.
  • We held our annual Fall Open House on Sept. 17, inviting students, faculty and staff to check out our space.
  • We hosted a Sober Tailgate on Sept. 7 before the UT vs. LSU game. Check out the photos.

University Health Services

UT Flu Shot Campaign

  • The annual Flu Shot Campaign continues until Oct. 17. Flu shots are provided free with UT Select. Check our website and follow us on social media @Healthyhorns to see the schedule and find a clinic near you.

  • Our new high-risk drinking prevention initiative, SHIFT, launched on Sept. 24. Students, faculty and staff enjoyed popsicles, giveaways and conversation about shifting the campus culture around substance use. KXAN and The Daily Texan covered the event.
  • The newly-renovated Longhorn Wellness Center, a unit of both Counseling and Mental Health Center and University Health Services, opened on Sept. 5. Check out the photos.

University Housing and Dining

  • We are excited to host our English as a Second Language program for 24 staff members. This program is offered to benefits-eligible employees in our department and University Unions .

  • Our Residence Life team launched the sixth semester of Longhorns for a Culturally Competent Campus (LC3) on Sept. 14 with 26 students.

  • As one of the largest employers on campus with 645 students and 220 part-time staffers, our human resources team attended many events to recruit new staff. They hosted three dining job fairs last month and also attended the work study job fair.

Bevo Pay

  • Our marketing and communications team promoted Bevo Pay at UT Marketplace on Sept. 11 and at Party on the Plaza on Sept. 4. We shared program benefits, the new name and graphics.

University Unions

  • Tickets go on sale for the 39th annual Madrigal Dinner: Never Break on Oct. 14 via Texas Box Office. The Campus Events + Entertainment Creative Arts + Theatre Committee will host this student-written, produced and performed comedic play, choir concert and a four-course meal on Nov. 21–23.

  • The Student Activity Center has been renamed the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center (WCP) in honor of the university’s former president Bill Powers. Honored guests paid tribute to Powers and his legacy at a naming ceremony on Sept. 20.
  • The University Unions calendar is still available for purchase via TXShop.
  • The Kindness Cart continued it's surprise appearances on campus on Sept. 26. Staff handed out cold bottled water outside the Texas Union.

Doug Garrard, Office of the Dean of Students, gave welcome remarks at the Senate of College Councils luncheon.

Rita Miller, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, shared information about the Division of Student Affairs to 70 student tour guides in the Office of Admissions.

Lindsay Wilson, University Housing and Dining, shared the principles of a healthy diet during Alejandra De Angulo’s Nutrition 306 – Fundamentals of Nutrition class on Sept. 6. The lecture focused on how students can eat healthy on campus and University Housing and Dining resources. She also presented the versatility and health benefits of whole grains at the University Residence Hall Association (URHA) Food Committee on Sept. 10 in honor of National Whole Grains Month.
