Description

Although autonomous robotic systems perform remarkably in structured environments, integrated human-robotic systems are superior to them in unstructured environments that are highly dynamic in their nature. Powered exoskeleton is a wearable mobile machine that is powered by a system of electronic motors, pneumatics, levers, hydraulics or a combination of technologies that allow for limb movement with increased strength and endurance.  Exo-skeletons are already being used in the medical industry to rehabilitate injured patients and to assist the disabled. They have also found their way into military applications. Soon, they’ll be used by the construction industry.

FDA started approving these device for personal use. Lockhead Martin has an exoskeleton that is ready for use in construction. Esko Bionics has ZeroG wearable exoskeleton which is the same as the Fortis. The ZeroG allows for use of handheld tools for extended periods without the weight of the tool. Esko Bionics has two models of the ZeroG arm available trough United Rentals.one for aerial platforms and the other for scaffold systems. They both allow for wieghtless operation of hand tools. Improving both safety and productivity. EksoVest from Ekso Bionics is an upper body exoskeleton that elevates and supports a worker's arm to assist them with tasks ranging from chest height to overhead. Latest studies indicate they reduce stress and preent injuries - especially back injuries. Also benefifical for working overhead for long periods of time - ceiling workers.

Benefits and Barriers

  • Decreased fatigue
  • Increased production efficiency and flexibility
  • Improved safety & reduced work-related injury
  • Missing standards
  • Unclear benefits
  • High complexity of movements – lowering, lifting, carrying over short distances which need to be carried out normally. Cannot be slowed down.
  • Power source for long shifts
  • Long shifts require them to be comfortable.
