General information

University faculty members with a nine-month basis assignment may be eligible to elect salary spread so that payments are received in the summer. Once salary spread has been elected, the arrangement is irrevocable for the remainder of the fiscal year. It will remain in effect for all future fiscal years until a cancellation request is sent to Payroll Services or until the employee becomes ineligible.

To request or end Salary Spread, faculty should submit the Payroll Services: Salary Spread Request Form by August 31 for the upcoming fiscal year start. New hires with spring start dates should submit the form by January 15. Please email Payroll Services directly with questions.

Salary spread payments distributed in the summer are funded based on the costing allocation in place at the time of the payment. Guidance for Funding Changes During Long Session With Salary Spread (PDF) includes information on how to proactively and retroactively assign costing so that encumbrances and actuals are charged as intended. For further assistance, please contact pr.financials@austin.utexas.edu.

Faculty supplements

Faculty endowed and non-endowed supplements are academic-enabled nine-month pay, and will also be paid out over 12 months if salary spread is selected.

Eligibility

To be eligible for salary spread, the employee must be assigned in a faculty title at the university. In addition, assignments must have a nine-month basis, end before June (i.e., not a summer assignment), and cannot be paid from a grant (i.e., 26 account number). Note that the grant-funding limitation does not apply to summer assignments and their funding. If an employee has non-grant funding for a nine-month assignment and grant funding for a summer assignment, the non-grant-funded nine-month salary is eligible for salary spread.

Faculty additional employment is not eligible for salary spread.
