5/22/09 AVID - Compressing QuickTimes for Web Download Using Compressor

1. First open sequence in timeline and select the video and audio tracks to export. Mark an in point at the beginning of the portion of the timeline to export and an out point at the end of the portion of the timeline to export. If the whole timeline is to be exported mark an in point at the beginning and an out at the end.

2. Example of how timeline should look before exporting.


3. Next go to >File>Export>

FOR WINDOWS or Mac USE THIS SETTING for a Native Quicktime.

>RGB with Native Dimensions

This will produce a DNXHD Quicktime at the same quality that you are currently editing. Most uncompressed AVID Quicktime that can be exported.

4. Save to a local storage drive or personal drive.

. Don't Save to the Macintosh HD or Desktop. This will slow down the process. COMPRESS THIS FILE USING “COMPRESSOR” SOFTWARE

6. Open the “Compressor Software from applications folder on Macintosh HD

7. Import the QuickTime file that was just made into compressor. Click the “Add

File” button and navigate to the location of the QuickTime. File will load into

compressor.

8. To add the web compression settings click on >Window>Settings. To show the

settings window.

9. In the settings window open the compression settings template to apply to the Quicktime. Click on >Apple>Other Workflow>Web>Download>QuickTime 7

10. Then select all the QuickTime 7 compatible settings and drag them up to the

Project Window and drop them on the window where it is displayed to “Drag Settings and Destinations Here”


11. This will apply all the compression templates to the QuickTime loaded in the project window.


12. We can see our original frame size in the Geometry tab of the Inspector window.

13. Frame size will need to be adjusted to avoid 16:9 video looking anamorphic and to make sure SD 4:3 video looks correct.

Note: when entering custom frame sizes be sure to know if your default aspect ratio from your source movie is 4:3 or 16:9. The numbers you enter will be constrained to the proportions of your aspect ratio.

In the example Above: we are working with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

In the example Below: we are working with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

14. When ready to compress simply click “Submit” in the bottom right corner of your project window and your movie will begin to compress to your destination (by default the destination is usually the same location as your source movie).
