EDP New Student Checklist

All new EDP Students are encouraged to view and utilize the EDP New Student Checklist. EDP will not track your progress through the checklist - this is simply a helpful list for new students, to use if you wish.

How to Get Here

Location

The Educational Psychology Department is located in the Sanchez Building, or "SZB". The physical address of the Sanchez Building is 1912 Speedway, Austin, TX 78712 (northwest corner of Speedway and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., across the street from the Texas State History Museum).

Travel by Air

For new students coming to Austin by air, the least expensive method of transportation to campus from the airport is typically via the Airport Flyer service offered by Capital Metro. The Airport Flyer schedule is available on capmetro.org. Taxi and ride-share transportation options are also available from the airport to campus.

Parking

Parking is extremely limited at UT, and there is no free parking on campus. The closest parking garage to the Sanchez Building is the Brazos Street (BRG) parking garage. There is an hourly fee for parking. Parking & Transportation officers give tickets very quickly, so be careful not to park illegally (parking tickets are expensive, and unpaid tickets may affect your ability to register).

Living in Austin

International Students

International students should visit UT's International Students Office new student webpage.

English Language Evaluation

All new international students with degrees from non-English-speaking universities are required to undergo a brief evaluation for speaking and writing English (English Second Language evaluation). The International Office will conduct the English language evaluation during New International Student Orientation. This evaluation is done at no cost to the student. If the student does not pass the evaluation, they will be required to take an English Language course during their first semester at UT.

International New Student Orientation

UT International students are strongly encouraged to attend the University's International New Student Orientation in addition to the EDP Orientation.

 Immigration Briefing and Check-In (IBC)

UT International students are required by UT to attend an Immigration Briefing and Check-In (IBC) - check-in for more information and dates. At IBC, you will learn about immigration, work eligibility in the U.S., how to obtain U.S. forms of identification (i.e. driver's license and social security number), and health insurance requirements.

Advising & Registration

During EDP Orientation, you will meet with your program's Area Chair or Director to determine what classes to take in the Fall. During this advising session, you will submit your EDP Advising Form, which is required for you to enroll in classes.

**Summer-Start Students: Some EDP programs allow students to start early in the Summer vs. Fall. If you wish to start courses in the Summer session, you must:

  1. Contact the EDP Graduate Coordinator by May 1st to inform that you wish to start in the Summer.
  2. Contact the Program Area Chair in your area of study as soon as possible to arrange a time to fill out an Advising Form so that you can register for Summer courses. Read through the Advising & Registration page in the Student Handbook for information registration and payment dates/deadlines.

Fall-Start Students: Course advising and registration for new graduate students takes place during Orientation week in August. In early August, your Registration Information Sheet (RIS) will be available through the Office of the Registrar website. The RIS will show your registration times as well as links to the Course Schedule, your Tuition Bill and Student Accounts Receivable. You will also be able to determine if you have any registration bars attached to your record.

Course Waivers:

EDP suggests you review the Course Waiver process for EDP and submit any waivers (particularly Foundation Course waivers) before Orientation if possible, as waivers may affect what courses you will take in your first semester. While you won't get an official Program of Work until Orientation, you can get a good sense of what courses will may be taking by visiting the Program of Work page in the EDP Student Handbook.

Orientation Information

The Calendar at the top of this page has dates for various new student Orientations. All incoming EDP students are required to attend the EDP Orientation.

It is very important that you attend the EDP Orientation in person (no Zoom link will be available). The EDP Graduate Advisor will provide important guidance and advice to all new students, and discuss EDP Departmental and University of Texas procedures. Orientation will be followed by program-specific course advising, which is required in order for you to enroll in classes.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to seeing you soon!
