HOW TO RENEW MATLAB LICENSE

How to know what type of license you have:

  • Network license - VPN required to run MATLAB off campus.  Most UT Desktops fall into this category and some laptops.
  • Standalone license ("TAH Designated Computer") - requires Mathworks.com logon to download and activate.


Renew Standalone License AFTER it has already expired

Windows

  • Go to the Start menu to the All Programs list. Select MATLAB, the MATLAB release, and then select the "Activate MATLAB" link.

    • NOTE: We recommend that you run MATLAB as administrator, so that it can update the appropriate files.  (right-click on MATLAB >> runas Administrator).

  • Follow the Activation steps below.

Linux/Unix/Mac 

  • Run the activate_matlab.sh script found in your $MATLAB/bin folder.
  • Follow the Activation steps below.

Activation Process for all OS's

  1. Select "Activate automatically using the Internet", and click "Next".
  2. Log in with your MathWorks account by filling in your credentials and clicking "Next".
  3. Select your license number from the list that appears, and click next.
  4. Use the standalone key you used to activate the product.
  5. Submit your activation by clicking "Activate".
  6. When activation is complete, click "Finish" to start MATLAB.
  7. You will need to restart MATLAB once finished.

Renew Standalone License BEFORE the license expires annually in January

  1. Launch MATLAB (run as Administrator)
  2. From the Help menu, select Licensing > Update Current Licenses…
  3. Select the ""Total Academic Headcount Campus - TAH Designated Computer" and click Update.
  4. A window asking you if you are sure will appear. Click Yes.
  5. Your license has been updated.
  6. Restart MATLAB for the changes to take effect.
  7. Upon re-launching MATLAB, the license expiration notice should no longer appear.
