Once the candidacy application is approved by the Graduate School, the student will be admitted to candidacy. Students must take -99R for one semester and -99W every semester after advancing to candidacy, including the semester they graduate. Students can take 3, 6, or 9 hours of dissertation depending on how many credit hours they need. Students do not need to take research credit hours once they are in candidacy.

If students are admitted to candidacy by the Graduate School before the mid-semester deadline (the graduate coordinator or the Graduate School can advise what the deadline is each semester) and plan to graduate within two semesters, then students can petition to add the -99R 99W course that same semester. Otherwise, they should register for it in the next semester. In the event that a student completes and successfully defends their dissertation while registered in -99R, the student will be allowed to add -99W in order to graduate.
