  • Support the Ideation process:  
    • CII members across different committees and Communities for Business Advancement support the identification of potential topics for research and development in our annual Ideation process.  
    • A Task Force, formed by invitation, selects projects for funding, and the CII Board of Advisors reviews and ranks the shortlisted topics. 
  • Serve on a Research Team: Every year, employees from member organizations volunteer to join Research Teams, contributing to industry advancement. 
  • Serve on the Funded Studies Committee: Members join by invitation to provide thought leadership, guiding the CII research process. 

 

Joining a Research Team as an Industry Member Volunteer 

CII forms new Research Teams yearly, introducing research topics and requesting nominations of volunteers to join our Research Teams around February. The nomination period extends period extends until late April. To be part of the distribution list that receives the request for nominations (RFN), make sure that you have an active CII account. CII Board of Advisors and Alternates also receive the request and a description of the topics in the CII Spring Board of Advisors Meeting.  

As a CII research team Research Team member, you:  

  • Influence Capital Projects: Past research on topics on pre-project planning Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) and Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) significantly improved project delivery. We aim to keep impacting the industry with member support by improving current processes and identifying new practices.  
  • Collaborate with Peers and Academics: Build a diverse network and gain new professional perspectives. Former Team members often form lasting connections.  
  • Get Early Access to Findings: Be a front-runner in industry knowledge, becoming an expert in emerging areas and tools. Share your expertise with peers.  
  • Develop Skills: Enhance your leadership, presentation, communication skillscommunication skills.    

 

Typically, CII research teams work for periods between one and two years with a mix of online and face-to-face meetings (three or four meetings per year). The average monthly effort for this project is expected to be three to 10 hours. The time commitment will be higher in months with F2F meetings (eight hours plus travel time) and lower in months with online calls (a one-hour call and some time for small tasks or data collection).  

All nominations are vetted with by each member organization's Board of Advisormember. CII assesses the nomination with the goal of maximizing the team's diversity in terms of backgrounds, types of organization (owner, contractors, service providers, suppliers), and industry sectors sector representation. Academics 

CII selects Principal Investigators for overarching research using requests for qualifications (RFQs) and requests for proposals (RFPs). An RFQ/RFP A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) or Request for Proposals (RFP) is typically sent out once per year to a distribution list maintained by CII and to the Construction Research Congress’ Congress (CRC) distribution list. RFQs will focus primarily on the PI’s qualifications and not require a proposal. To qualify, an academic must hold a terminal degree and have a full-time tenure-track appointment to at an accredited university.
