Documentation on how to Find Computer name, setup VPN, and remote into machine


Submit a ticket to LAITS to request a NAT address and Screen Sharing access for the computer you want to be able to remotely access.

Setting up Remote Access for macOS:

  1. How to identify the computer name for your Mac:
    1. Click the Apple menu icon on the Mac menu bar and select About this Mac.

    2. From the System Information screen, click “System Report…”
    3. Your computer name is listed on the bottom left corner of the System Report window that appears.
    4. The FQDN for your computer is [Computer Name]@austin.utexas.edu. In our example, the FQDN for our machine is LAITS-12345@austin.utexas.edu

  2. Make sure you have VPN setup and running.

  3. How to remote into your Mac:
    1. Open Spotlight by selecting the magnifying glass icon on the Mac menu bar.




    2. Type “Screen Sharing” into the search bar

    3. Open Screen Sharing by double clicking on the its icon from Spotlight. This application is rather hidden, but can be saved for quicker access by right clicking on its icon in the dock, selecting options, and clicking "Keep in Dock."




    4. Type your FQDN into the Screen Sharing window and press connect.

    5. Enter your credentials for the machine and you will have remote access to your machine.


Setting up Remote Access for Windows:

 

  1. How to identify the computer name for your Mac:
  2. Right click on the Windows icon and select “Settings”
  3. In the Windows Settings window, select “System”
  4. From the “System” settings page, scroll down on the left pane and select “About”
  5. On the right pane, your computer name will be listed next to “Device name”
  6. The FQDN for your computer is [Computer Name]@austin.utexas.edu. In this case the FQDN for our machine is LAITS-12345@austin.utexas.edu">LAITS-12345@austin.utexas.edu
  7. Make sure you have VPN setup and running.

  9. How to remote into your Windows PC:
  10. Click on the Windows icon and type “Remote Desktop.”
  11. Type “Screen Sharing” into the search bar
  12. Open Screen Sharing by double clicking on the its icon from Spotlight
  13. Type your FQDN into the Screen Sharing window and press connect.
  14. You now have remote access to your machine.
