As a McCombs student you are required to have a notebook computer. Much of the software used in McCombs Business School courses is available for you to install on your own computer. The vast majority of this software is available to you for free from the software publisher or free to current students through some academic program. A handful of applications require you to purchase them, but they are still available at greatly reduced prices as long as you are a current student.

The applications listed below are the ones available to you to install on your own computer. Click the name of an application to go to that application's profile page. The profile page for each application explains where you can download the software or where you must purchase the software in few cases.it also lists where else the application is available for you to use without installing on your own computers.

 If help pages exist to explain how to install or use the software, those will also be listed. If Lynda.com contains training videos related to the software, then that will be listed as well. Certain applications are available as part of a basic Windows VM that you can obtain from the SWAT Shop at CBA 1.324. These VMs are primarily intended for Mac users who need to use this software offline instead of using mCloud Apps. If you do not have a Windows computer or an existing Windows VM for your Mac, then you  should use mCloud Apps for these applications whenever possible.

Not all of the software available for student computers is available for Mac computers. If you use a Mac, then you have two main options to address this issue:

 

  1. mCloud

    The preferred mechanism for Mac users to use Windows only applications is to run them on mCloud Apps. This is by far the quickest and easiest way to do so. More information about using mCloud Apps can be found in the mCloud Apps wiki page.

  2. Windows VM

    If you do not wish to use mCloud Apps for any reason, then you're only other option is to run Windows in some form on your Macintosh computer. The least difficult way to do this would be to run some form of virtual machine software. The most common virtual machine applications for the Mac are VMWare Fusion, Parallels or Oracle Virtual Box.  

    1. VMWare Fusion is a commercial application available from VMWare that normally sells for around $70 at the campus computer store. The Business school participates in an academic program that allows students in its courses to obtain this software for free. Fusion is the preferred option we suggest for business student Mac users that do not already use some virtualization software.
    2. Virtual Box is free an can be downloaded at https://www.virtualbox.org/.
    3. Parallels is a commercial application available at http://www.parallels.com/ for around $80.

    Which visualization software you use is entirely a matter for you own preference and budget. if you are already running some form of visualization software you are comfortable with we do not recommend you change. Once installed, you use this software to create a Virtual Machine to run Windows. You need to obtain a copy of the Windows installation files just as any Windows user would and install Windows into your VM. Students can obtain a free copy of Windows through Dream Spark Premium.

After you set install Windows and log into it, you then can follow the normal instructions for installing Windows application into that VM.

The SWAT Shop does also offer two pre-build Windows VMs. Once contains Palisade Decision Tools preinstalled and the other contains Visual Studio preinstalled. These VMs were distributed to students prior to mCloud Apps. The SWAT Shop will provide these to students where necessary, students are strongly encourages to instead use mCloud apps wherever possible.
