Training

  • All users MUST be trained by the DSF manager prior to first use.  Please request training via the "Available Resources" panel of your FBS Dashboard or by sending an email to dsfcore@austin.utexas.edu.

  • The training takes about 30 minutes and does not require samples.

  • Training is offered one day per week max (during mid to late afternoon) and we strongly prefer to train in groups to save time.  Thus, overall, please request training in advance because we can't guarantee we can give you access to the machines immediately.

Booking an Instrument

  • Instrument reservations MUST be made, and made via the FBS scheduling calendar  HERE.

  • Please make sure you book adequate time40 cycles of the default SYBR Green protocol takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.  Thus, we highly recommend booking a 2 hour time window.  Three reported and/or discovered time violations will result in a ban.

  • Bookings can be modified via FBS up to the last second before your reservation begins.  If you must change your reservation after it begins, please contact DSF at dsfcore@austin.utexas.edu.

Changing the Block (96 vs 384)

  • The machines are powered on 24/7, but they enter a low-energy hibernation state when idle.  Touch the LCD screen to wake it, then touch the green power button to wake the machine.  Also, it is worth noting that each machine has a backup battery which can power an active machine for 2 hours in the event of power loss.

  • Each machine has its own labeled blocks and heated covers (96 and 384).  It is absolutely essential that you use the blocks dedicated to the machine, because each machine is precisely calibrated to its own blocks.

  • The machine must be powered off to open the front panel to change the block and heated cover.  The machine will give an error message if the block and heated cover aren't installed correctly.

  • Please keep all components in their closed, dedicated containers to prevent contamination with dust.  Dust gives off fluorescence.
