Choice of language

The primary title is generally provided in English except in the following instances,

  • An English-speaking artist gives work a title in another language
  • Works in the Latin American art collection are entered with Spanish title first, unless evidence of artist specifically giving it an English title.

Display order for multiple and translated titles

  1. Primary title: original/preferred language and translation “Primary title [Translation]” and “from the series [translation] (series optional to include in display)
  2. Translation
  3. Series title: series title only, no descriptive texts
  4. (and ongoing) Alternate titles

Translations

Translations are entered within brackets following the primary language title in the primary title. This primary title is public facing and is what will be presented in captions for the gallery, publications, and eMuseum. When a translation is included in the primary title, label the language of the primary only, and not the language of the translation. List translations separately following the combination display title.

Series titles

Series titles must be entered both in the primary title if preferred and also as a separate entry.

Alternate titles

Alternate titles are prior title attributions, other titles listed in bibliography, or “previously known as”. Do not include in display.

Descriptive titles

Descriptive titles should be entered in English.
