This page shares locations and explanations of the tools available in Map Viewer. More detailed step-by-step guides on how to use individual Map Viewer tool such as adding data, styles, or filters can be found in LIS Resources

  • Add Data: Adds geographic data to Map Viewer including AGOL content,  CSV, KML, Web Services, and GeoRSS. For AGOL content select Browse Layers to search for data found in My Content, My Favorites, My Groups, My Organization, Subscription Content, Living Atlas, or ArcGIS Online.
  • Layers: Displays data currently added to Map Viewer. Clicking the tree dots icon displays options for that specific Layer including Zoom to, Rename, Show Table, Show Properties, Remove, and Add to New Group (creates a Map Viewer Layer group).
  • Tables: Adds tabular data to Map Viewer that is available in AGOL content.
  • Basemap: Displays and adds basemaps to Map Viewer. Basemaps are provided mainly by ESRI but TRecs LIS also offer campus specific basemaps. Basemaps display under Map Viewer data to provide geographic context. Icon: 
  • Legend: Displays the legend for Map Viewer. Legends offer descriptions and symbol information for better interpretation and understanding of the Map Viewer content. You cannot edit the legend content in this Map Viewer tool. Edits to the legend can only be made on the right side panel. 
  • Bookmarks: Displays and alters predefined locations on the map. Bookmarks are created by the owner of the Web Map. 
  • Save: Saves a new Web Map and saves changes to an existing Web Map. When you save content in Map Viewer you are creating or altering a Web Map. 
  • Create New Map: Opens a blank Map Viewer page. 
  • Open Existing Map: Opens existing Web Maps found in My Content, My Favorites, My Groups, My Organization, Subscription Content, Living Atlas, or ArcGIS Online.
  • Map Properties: Displays settings including Enable Background Color (selects a background color for the Web Map), Preserve Map Scale (opens Web Map at a saved scale across devices), and Time Slider Option (allows for visualizing temporal data).
  • Share Map: Displays and alters the current sharing level of the Web Map. Alter the sharing levels of the Web Map to share at the Owner, Organization, Public, and Group Level. 
  • Print: Displays the printing settings for the Web Map. Allows for exporting Web Map as PDF, PNG32, PNG8, JPG, GIF, EPS, SVG, SVGZ, or AIX.
  • Properties: Displays properties configuration for selected Layer including Enable Legend for this Layer, Transparency, Blending, Visible Range, and Enable Editing. Information and Symbology for selected Layer are displayed but not editable in this location. 
  • Styles:  Displays style configurations for selected Layer. Change the symbology of the selected Layer by  Field or Expression to use Unique Symbols or the default Location (Single Symbol). 
  • Filter: Displays filter configurations for selected Layer. Filters highlight features that match the inputted expression by turning off the visibility of features in the selected Layer that do not match the inputted expression.  
  • Clustering: Displays clustering configurations for selected Layer including Enable Clustering, Cluster Radius, Size Range, Cluster Label, Cluster Pop-ups, and Cluster Fields. Clustering groups point features that are within a certain distance of one another on screen into one symbol.
  • Configure Pop- ups:  Displays pop-up configuration options for selected Layer including Enable Pop-ups, Title, Fields (visibility and ordering), and Add Content (Filed, Chart, Image, and Text). 
  • Configure Fields: Displays attribute table field configuration options for selected Layer including field Display Name and field Formatting. 
  • Labels: Creates labels to guide readers to points of interest of the. 
  • Search: Zooms to searched locations on the map, such as addresses, places, and points of interest.
  • Measurement: Creates temporary lines or polygons and displays the measurement information in specified units (feet, miles, yards, etc.)
  • Directions: Displays turn-by-turn driving and walking directions. 
  • Location: Displays coordinates. 
  • Edit: Displays editing options for selected Layer and enables editing for the Map Viewer data. Options are Edit Feature (geographic or table data) or Add Feature. 
  • Time: Displays the Time Slider. The Time Slider setting cannot be edited in this Map Viewer tool. Edits to the Time Slider can only be made through the Map Properties on the left side panel. 

Helpful Tips

Eye Icon: Used to turn Layer visibility on and off. 

Pencil Icon: Used to rename Web Map, Layers, or titles.  

Collapse Panels: Both the left and right side panels can be collapsed to view more or the web map itself by clicking Collapse found at the bottom of both side panels.
