McCombs Computer Services maintains a virtual machine (VM) that includes Visual Studio and SQL Management Studio that students can run on their own Windows or Macintosh computer. The VM is intended for students in certain MIS courses that require this software, but the VM is available to any currently enrolled student that wants it.

To run this virtual machine, you need a laptop PC or Mac with 4 GB of RAM and 20 GB of available disk space. The Mac OS should be version 10.6.8 or later, and the Windows OS should be Windows Vista or later. If you have a laptop that meets these requirements, then follow the instructions below to obtain the virtual machine.

First: Obtain an activation key for Windows 7

You need this even if you are already running Windows 7 on your laptop. The VM will require its own Windows 7 license.

  1. Log in to the McCombs-licensed Microsoft Imagine site
  2. Click on the Operating Systems tab at the left, and select Windows 7 from the right section
  3. Locate Microsoft Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 32-bit (English) and click Add To Cart
  4. Once the item is in your Shopping Cart, click the Check Out button to complete the process
  5. Write down the Activation Key provided in red, which you will use later

Second: Obtain a license key for VMWare Fusion license (Mac users only)

Windows users can skip this step.  If you use a Mac, you will need some specially licensed software to run the VM.

  1. Log in to the VMware Store
  2. Click on either VMware Fusion 4.0 (for Mac OS X) or VMware Player 4 (for Windows)
  3. Click Add To Cart to select the item
  4. Once the item is in your Shopping Cart, click the Check Out button to complete the process
  5. Review the Terms and Conditions, and click on Accept at the bottom
  6. Confirm your name and UT e-mail address, then click on Confirm Order
  7. Write down the red Serial Number provided (for Fusion only), which you will use later

Third: Visit the SWAT Shop to get the MIS Virtual Machine from Computer Services

Bring your laptop and the Windows 7 Activation Key and VMWare Serial Number to the SWAT Shop (CBA 1.328) in the basement of the CBA building. Computer Services will install VMWare Fusion if you have a Mac or VMWare Player if you have Windows computer. They will also copy over the MIS Virtual Machine files. The entire process takes 20 to 30 minutes.

If the SWAT Shop cannot install the VM on your computer at the time you visit due to high demand, you can schedule a time to return.

Mac Users:

Installing Fusion requires your personal license key. Computer Services cannot install Fusion for you if you do not bring your Fusion license key with you.

Mac Users and Windows Users:

Once installed, use VMWare Fusion or Player to launch your VM. At the prompt, enter your individual license key for Windows 7. If you do not have your license key with you at the time, you have 30 days to enter the key before Windows stops working in the VM.
