Our hearing has evolved to be more sensitive to mid-to-high frequencies since they most likely coincide with sounds of threats or voices. The 2-4kHz range is perceived most easily. Our lowest sensitivity occurs in lower and extremely high frequencies.

Note: In this picture, the ear will hear each of these frequencies as equally loud. Thus, it will take far more bass to be heard at the same loudness as a 3kHz tone.
