Start with a simple table reading.
 Work in beats!
Ask questions. Help actors define their objectives.
Be on time. Be prepared. That will create a sense of trust.
Experiment. Try things against the grain. Switch parts.
Give direction in language of permission, not enforcement.
Explore physical activity. Work with objects/pieces of clothing.
Explore the world beneath the lines. Words are the boats floating on the river. The emotions/subtext/subworld of the story are the current that runs beneath the surface. That's where you want to go.
 Remember the crowbars??
Help the actors discover what circumstances in their lives would need to exist in order for them to take the actions their characters take.
Manipulate the subworld of the story to focus the conflict.
