For Theatre and Dance Productions

Auditions for department productions are held throughout the academic year.  They typically take place in the middle of the semester before the production is to be produced.  For example, auditions for the spring 2018 semester production will take place in or around October 2017.  Once announced, specific audition information is sent via email to Theatre and Dance majors.

For Dance Placement

Students wishing to place into the Contemporary and/or Ballet Technique classes are required to attend the department Dance Placement Audition.  The auditions take place on the first day of class each fall and spring semester.

B.F.A. in Dance students will be placed into:

Contemporary Technique: TD 312C, 312D or 322E
Ballet Technique: TD 312F, 312G or 322J

B.A. Dance Emphasis students & Non-majors may be placed into:

Contemporary Technique: TD 322C, 322D or 322E
Ballet Technique: TD 322F, 322G or 322J

Placement Auditions

Students should review the course schedule and attend the first day of class for TD 312C and/or TD 312F.

What to Prepare

Please come prepared to take a full technique class co-taught by B.F.A. technique faculty.  You will be taking class with the full B.F.A. program.  You will NOT need to bring prepared movement or music.  Dance faculty will be observing all auditions.

What to wear?

WOMEN: For Ballet please wear single-colored leotard, pink tights and ballet shoes. For Contemporary class you will need to be barefoot.
If you are auditioning for both classes, it will be most convenient for you to wear the same tights for the entire audition, so make sure you have tights that will also accommodate bare foot work (tights with the feet slit or footless tights). If this is not possible, you will have a brief break to change tights after the ballet portion of the audition.

MEN: For Ballet, please wear tightly fitting tee shirt, or black or white colored leotard; tightly fitting sweats or dancer’s shorts, or footed black or gray tights with ballet shoes or footless black or gray tights with thin socks and ballet shoes. The Contemporary section will be conducted in bare feet.

*Please note that baggy sweat pants, warmers, skirts, oversize shirts, etc. may NOT be worn for the placement audition class.*

Results

The B.F.A. Dance Placement Auditions provide placement for admission into majors level dance technique classes.  An intermediate level at minimum of either Ballet or Contemporary dance will serve students best for placement into dance technique courses that are restricted to dance majors.

Sometimes as a result of the placement audition, dance faculty recommend placement in Topics in Dance (302T).  Placement at that level does not guarantee a student's enrollment in courses available to non-majors, however; it is an indicator of where the student will make the most progress at that particular time.

Note: No audition is required for TD 302T, TD 312T or TD 352T.  See catalog specific course requirements. Instructor consent may be required.
