A proximity enabled UT ID card is used to grant you access to The Winship Building after hours when the building is locked and/or alarmed. When you swipe your card in front of the card reader the alarm is turned off on that door for a few seconds and the lock is disabled so you can enter.
Winship has two entrances that can be accessed at any time of day or night with your proximity card. These are the east entrance – the one that overlooks the creek next to San Jacinto Blvd, and the south main entrance - the far right door when facing the building from the outside. You must swipe your ID in front of the reader and it will make an audible beep to indicate that you can enter the building.
If you are exiting the building after the alarms have been turned on for the day, then you must leave through one of the proximity doors to prevent setting off the security system. When you push the push-bar on the proximity door, the alarm is temporarily shunted so that you can exit. However, if the door remains open for more than a few seconds the alarm will be set off and UTPD will respond. Also, if you exit through a non-proximity enabled door after the alarms are turned on, then UTPD will respond.
Proximity card issuance is limited to those people who have a legitimate need to have all hours access to the building. Generally speaking, faculty, staff, and certain graduate students are issued proximity cards as needed.
Hours when doors are unlocked:
- Front Doors (proximity accessible)
- Unlocked Monday-Friday: 8a-5p
- East exterior door (always proximity)
- Loading dock (always proximity)
Faculty / Staff / Hourly Employees / Students
All UT Students, Staff, and Faculty have default access to the main south entrance. If you need access to a part of Winship or the Lab Theater that you do not currently have access to, contact David Thomases.
Non-Students / Official Visitors / Contract Employees
If you have a UT ID card, but your employment is such that you have a contract designating your pay rather than hourly timesheets, then you will have to follow a different procedure for proximity access to the building:
- First, you should work with Liliana Zapatero to get the designation of "Official Visitor".
- Once that status is activated (approximately 2 business days), then you need to visit the ID CENTER with a government issued photo ID to activate your UT ID card.
- Then you can work with Cassie Gholston who will grant you access to particular doors of The Winship Building.
