Study images are now made available for public access on eMuseum with some limitations. Include the following statement in the public caption field.

Public Caption: This image is for study only, and may not accurately represent the object’s true color or scale. It should not be shared or reproduced without permission by the copyright holder.

Standards before marking image available for public access:

Overall, the work object should be legible. Distortions, inaccurate color balance, or packing material in the image should not prohibit the image from being shared as a study reference. See examples in the appendix of this guide.

  • Should not display storage facility.
  • Proportions should not be extremely distorted.
  • Image should be cropped as close to the edge of the object and excluding other objects or figures in the background where possible. When complete object is not within the image’s frame, some cropping of edges is acceptable, but should include the entirety of the work’s composition (print is shown, but edge of sheet is not; painting is complete, but frame is cropped, etc).
  • Do not include details of staff inscriptions, details of damage or deterioration, or back side of work.
  • Do not select any images which include staff members, or hands that are not gloved if touching work.
  • Living artist, check to see if part of ARS, if yes, include copyright language. If artist with known restrictions like Glenn Ligon or Andy Warhol, do not make public.
