This is uncharted territory for most of us, but here are a few recommendations we have brainstormed so far:

  • For written exams
    • Implement an honor code.  The university student honor code can be found here.
    • Use a dedicated cover sheet that the students must sign verifying they have read and understand the honor code.
    • Construct questions in such a way that having internet access will not give students an advantage.
    • Accept photos/scans of exams.  Recommend a dedicated scanner phone application.
  • Use Canvas Quizzes to create exams
    • Use a question bank to randomize questions/answers.  A demonstration is available here.
    • Set a time limit on the exam/quiz so that students must study even if the exam is open book/notes.  You may need use the "Moderate Quiz" feature to add additional time for SSD students.  A demonstration of the "Moderate Quiz" feature is here.
    • Proctorio in Canvas
      • Proctorio is an automated proctoring software that works within your web browser to monitor activity during exam/quizzes. It is integrated directly into Canvas' quizzes and offers a flexible service of ID verification, computer lock down, secure browser settings, admin and faculty controls, content protection, recording of video, audio, and screen activity, and analytics.
