This is a short summary of normal IGRINS startup sequence for observers at DCT

Before You Begin:

Check IGRINS is healthy, verify with your TO

 The HKP should always be running

 (screen shot)

Start of Night:

1. Wake up ICC on the left (a big iMac) and close all the inactive windows (HKP, DTP, SCP, QLP)

2. Turn on the IG proxy  by clicking the icon on the desktop

3. Turn on the IG software (HKP house keeping package, SCP slitview camera, DTP data taking package) using a terminal

> cd igrins/igrins_admin
>cat  icsrun_dct.sh    
(check contents)
>sh icsrun_dct.sh

HKP, SCP and DTP windows will automatically open

4. Start the HKP. In the HKP gui, click the “periodic monitoring”  and, below that, the “Send Alert (T>20)” buttons

Calibrations:

1. Test Exposures

First take a test image on both SVC and with the HK detectors

    • Turn off ‘automatically save’ 
    • Use shortest exposure 1.63s

In the Status box, it needs to have the lines (for the SVC, and then for both H and K in the DTP)

    •  “[time] NFS connection succeeded”
    •  “[time] Detector Status Check”
    •  “[time] Detector is Ready”

2. Darks

 

(May be done without a TO. Note - if TCS is not running, which your TO is in charge of, the header information will not be completely accurate and you will see a bunch of error messages)

Check all the lights are off around the telescope

Setup:

    • dome is closed
    • instrument cube is closed
    • all lights are off

Note - the telescope has to be at zenith to close the cover

Using the DTP, take darks:

  • OBJ name = DARK, OBJ type = DARK
  •  Use same exposure time as you expect for flats (300s for now)
  • Click automatically save

 Don't forget to start the observing log

3. Flats

(TO is required)

Ask your TO to:

    • move the telescope to flat position
    • open the telescope and instrument cube
    • put in the IGRINS fold mirror
    • turn on TCS

A. FLAT OFF: Take flat offs before the flat lamps are on (required for pipeline)

Wait for your TO to make sure the telescope is ready

Using the DTP:

    • OBJ name = FLAT OFF, OBJ type = FLAT
    • Click automatically save

 Don't forget to add to the observing log

B. FLAT ON: Take flats with the flat lamps on (also required for pipeline)

Kindly ask your TO to turn on the Flat lamps

Using the DTP:

    • OBJ name = FLAT ON, OBJ type = FLAT
    • Click automatically save

 Don't forget to add to the observing log

Instrument and Telescope Startup

  1. Wake up ICC in the control room (a big iMac) and close all the inactive windows (HKP, DTP, SCP, QLP, IGRINS_Proxy).
  2. Click "IGRINS_Proxy" on the top right corner.
  3. Open a terminal and type "cd ~/ingrins_admin" 
  4. Type "sh icsrun_dct.sh". HKP, SCP and DTP windows automatically open.
  5. On the HKP window, click the "Periodic Monitoring" button. 
  6. Open another terminal and type "sh run_qlp.sh". This will open two QuickLook Package (QLP) windows.
  7. Take short exposures on SCP and DTP to test readout. If you see noise pattern or low-resolution image, repeat the short exposures or contact observing support. 
  8. Use the QLP to check the noise level in those test exposures by opening the digital log on each window and clicking "Auto Refresh".
  9. Now you are ready to use DTP. 
  10. Tell Telescope Operator (TO) that IGRINS is ready.
  11. Start taking calibration frames (Darks, Flat-off, Flat-on).

Note: Unless absolutely required for your science, please disable the autosave feature on the slit camera viewer. This will save 30GB of space each night.

Note: When keeping logs, track the A or B location of your frames. Your data reduction will be better in cases where you manually change the nod location or have bad frames.

Note: The RA and DEC boxes in the DTP must be populated in order for the frames to be saved. If they are missing you will waste a full exposure time.

Note: You need at least one 300s sky frame each night for the PLP to work correctly. If you will not get one of these for your science, then get one to help with reductions.

Note: The A and B box positions need to be verified each night because the slit moves in its holder up to 5 pixels between observing runs.
