Every Cockrell School of Engineering student has access to 4 GB of storage for personal use which is configured for you alone. Your home directory is available remotely by path, mapping the drive, SFTP (Secure FTP) and Webdav. Your "home directory" is located on a network drive with the following path:

\\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\yourDept\eid

where "eid" is your personal UT EID and where "yourDept" is your departmental major as follow:

Department folders are as follows:

  • ase - Aerospace Engineering
  • bme - Biomedical Engineering 
  • caee - Civil and Architectural Engineering
  • cse - General Engineering
  • ece - Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • me - Mechanical Engineering
  • non - Non-Engineering major taking an engineering course
  • pge - Petroleum Engineering

ACCESSING YOUR FILE SPACE

WINDOWS

In Engineering Labs in the Austin Domain

Your Desktop and "Documents" will be stored on the your home directory space. You can access your home directory by doing the following:

  1. In a file explorer window, enter the UNC path of your folder, \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID.

Quick Access

  1. If you are ON-CAMPUS using a non-Austin domain computer, you will need to connect to VPN (see Connecting with VPN)
  2. If you are OFF-CAMPUS, connect with VPN (see Connecting with VPN)
  3. In a file explorer window, enter the UNC path of your folder, \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID
  4. A window will popup asking for your username and password. Use your UT-EID and password. Prepend your EID with "austin.utexas.edu\". For example, austin.utexas.edu\xyz123
  5. Note: You can also create this as a shortcut on your desktop (right-click on the desktop, New->Shortcut).

Mapping a drive

  1. If you are ON-CAMPUS on a NON-Austin domain computer you will need to connect to VPN (see Connecting with VPN)
  2. If you are OFF-CAMPUS, connect with VPN (see Connecting with VPN)
  3. Open a file explorer window to "Computer"
  4. Select Map network drive from the ribbon.
  5. In the box labeled "Folder," enter: \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\<yourDept>\<yourEID>
    • For example,  \\austin.utexas.edu\engrstu\CAEE\abc1234
  6. Select the checkbox: Connect using different credentials
  7. You will be asked for a username and password.
    • Username: austin.utexas.edu\yourEID
    • Password: <Enter your EID password.>

Using Secure FTP (SFTP)

  1. If you are OFF-CAMPUS, connect with VPN (see Connecting with VPN)
  2. Use an SSH client like, Filezilla.
    • Hostname:  sftp.austin.utexas.edu.
    • User name: your UT EID.
    • Port number:  22.
    • Authentication Method:  password.
  3. For username and password, use your UT EID
  4. Once you have connected browse to "DepartmentalDirectories/engrstu/yourDept"  (Do NOT go to the top-level folder named with your EID).

Webdav

  1. Open a file explorer window
  2. Select the Map network drive from the ribbon
  3. In the Folder field enter the following web address: https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu//>
  4. Check Reconnect at login only if you want this drive to be available everytime you log on to your computer.
  5. Check Connect using different credentials
  6. Enter your UT EID and password in the Username and Password fields and then select OK.
  7. Select Finish

MAC

Webdav

  1. Go > Connect to Server

Enter: https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu/yourDept/yourEID
For example, https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu/ME/abc123

Using Secure FTP (SFTP)

Use an SSH client like, Filezilla.

  1. Hostname:  sftp.austin.utexas.edu.
  2. User name: your UT EID.
  3. Port number:  22.
  4. Authentication Method:  password.
  5. For username and password, use your UT EID
  6. Once you have connected browse to "DepartmentalDirectories/engrstu/yourDept"  (Do NOT go to the top-level folder named with your EID).

DISK QUOTAS: 4 GB

If you reach your 4 GB quota, you will get an error message indicating that you do not have permissions to write or "disk is read only". You will need to remove files to get back within your quota.

To check your home directory size, highlight everything under \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID folder in the Windows Explorer (Ctrl-A) and then simultaneously press Alt-Enter. You will see the total amount of space used on the drive. If it's at or greater than 4 GB, then the system won't let you save anything until you bring that down below 4 GB.
