  1. Click "App Downloads" in the left menu

  2. Choose the appropriate installer for your OS.

  3. Run the installer from the downloads directory, or wherever the installer was saved.
    • On Mac systems, open the .dmg file. 
    • It appears as a drive on the desktop. 
    • Open it.
  4. Run the installer.
  5. Follow the install prompts, providing administrator account credentials as necessary.

CrashPlan Agent Sign in:

  1. Immediately after installation, CrashPlan will launch. 
  2. If your account already exists (this is most likely):Open Code42 (aka CrashPlan) either by searching in the start menu (for Windows) or in your Applications folder (for Mac). 
  3. Use your EID credentials in the username and password fields
  4. See important Info above for server/registration information.
  5. If a new account needs to be created
    • Complete the registration, or contact the CNS OIT helpdesk to create an account for you.
    • See "Important Info" above for server/registration information. 
    • Contact the helpdesk for the registration key or if you have any trouble registering.
  6. The Server Address is: cpmaster.its.utexas.edu
  7. If you receive an error at any point, please send a screenshot or the error text and your EID help@cns.utexas.edu

Configuration

  1. Click the "ChangeManage Files" button.
  2. Select the user profile for backup by placing a check in the box next to it..
  3. We recommend selecting the whole user folder then unchecking folders you don't want to backup
  4. Click "Save".
  5. Click the "Start Backup" button next to  "UTBackup-Master"

Restore

Small restores can be done via the crashplan website at https://utbackup.its.utexas.edu.

Large restores can be done via the client at the time of deployment.

It is highly recommended that large restores be done while the system is connected via ethernet. 

Client

  1. Launch CrashPlan, and provide EID credentials.
  2. Click 'Get Files'
  3. Select the date you'd like to restore from using the 'As Of Today' date picker.
  4. Place checks in the boxes next to the desired folders and files.
  5. Click the 'Get Files' button at the bottom right corner of the window.
  6. Use the default options.
  7. Click the 'go' button.

If it is interrupted for any reason, the restore can be resumed, and it will continue where it left off.

Web

  1. It is recommended to use Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explore/Edge.
  2. Login to https://utbackup.its.utexas.edu.
  3. Find the device using Smart Search, Users, or Devices.
  4. The restore button is small, and unlabelled, just above the "Bandwidth" graph.
  5.  by click on devices on the left.
  6. Click the restore button

    If the user has multiple workstations, or old backups from previous workstations, select the desired one from the drop menu at the top of the window.
  7. Place checks in the boxes next to the desired folders.
  8. Click the "Restore" button.
  9. A progress bar will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen, this is CrashPlan compressing the selected files (it will be a single .ZIP file).
  10. IMPORTANT: Don't close the browser window
  11. Click on the "Click here to download" button.
  12. Select where the file should be saved, and the name of the file.


Click the "Start Backup" button after installing.

titleKnown Issues and Bugs

Restores over 1-2gb are cumbersome, unpredictable, and often fail via the web interface. Using the client to perform large restores is recommended.

For mac web restores (or if you did not select 'current permissions' on a client restore) --- you MUST apply permissions after the restore completes to the files via chown/chmod or using the finder GUI (as always - contact help@cns.utexas.edu if you need assistance.
