The Dr. Mary Buice Alderson Undergraduate Scholarship

The Dr. Mary Buice Alderson Undergraduate Scholarships were established in 1996 in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin. In appreciation for their service to the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. C.J. (Shorty) Alderson and Dr. Mary Buice Alderson have been honored with the Alderson Lecture each year since 1981. They taught for a combined total of 85 years, including 70 years at The University of Texas. Few people have been as dedicated as the Aldersons to serving their profession and as devoted to teaching and working with individual students. Shorty died on August 31, 1970 at age of 81 and Mary on December 25, 1993 at age 85. Their dedication to the profession and to education has been further manifested by a generous bequeth from Dr. Mary Buice Alderson's estate to be used for scholarship in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. Awards made from the proceeds of this fund honor the memory of the Aldersons through the support of outstanding students in all areas of Kinesiology and Health Education.

Applications for the Dr. Mary Buice Alderson Undergraduate Scholarship are typically available mid-Fall in BEL 1005 or online, and are due in December. Recipients of the scholarship are required to attend the Alderson lecture in mid-spring to receive their award.
