We provide the following network shares:

  1. Autodesk-Student
    (  \\soa-data1.austin.utexas.edu\Autodesk-Student  )
    This read-only share contains copies of the student version downloads of autodesk products, it is preferred that students on-campus download these files from this share instead of directly from autodesk in order to conserve the universities internet bandwidth. students must still register at students.autodesk.com to obtain a serial number for product activation.

  2. Arc-GIS-Student
    (  \\soa-data1.austin.utexas.edu\Arch-GIS-Student  )
    This read-only share contains a copy of the ArcGIS software typically available from the ESRI Website. It is preferred that students on-campus download these files from this share instead of directly from ESRI in order to conserve the universities internet bandwidth.
     
  3. gis-data
    (  \\soa-data.austin.utexas.edu\GIS  ) 
    This read-only share has a variety of GIS data available to all UTSOA students for use in GIS courses, projects, and analysis.
     
  4. thomas
    (  \\soa-data.austin.utexas.edu\thomas ) 
    This network resource is to provide easy file sharing for UTSOA faculty and staff. it is not for use with sensitive or high security data. if you have a need to share or remotely store sensitive data, please schedule an appointment with IT to setup an appropriate resource.
     
  5. TransCAD-Student
    (  \\soa-data1.austin.utexas.edu\TransCAD-Student  ) 
    This read-only share contains a copy of TransCAD 5.0 in a compressed zip file for download.  A USB network license key with serial number is available for signout at the SOA Service Desk in the SOA Computer Lab.

Special Course or Project shares: If you require a network share for your project or course, please first review the other files-haring options listed at the course share page, and if none of these options suits your needs, fill out the help form to request a new share. 

Instructions
The sample instructions below use the network share 'courses' as an example. In order to connect to your network share, please replace 'courses' with the appropriate name from the list above.

PC Instructions

To access the network server 'server share name':

  1. open 'my computer'
  2. open the network drive listed as: "server share name" (soa-data.austin.utexas.edu)'

if you need to reconnect the drive, do the following:

  1. right click on 'my computer'
  2. select 'map network drive'
  3. select drive Z: (or other available drive)
  4. enter folder \\soa-data.austin.utexas.edu\gis
  5. if you are at a school computer logged in with your ut eid, select 'finish'
  6. if not: select 'connect using a different user name'
    1. enter 'austin\(your_ut_eid)' as the username
    2. enter your ut eid password
    3. select 'finish'

Mac Instructions

to access the network server "server share name": double click on the "server share name" icon on the desktop

if you need to reconnect the drive, do the following:

  1. select 'go' from the 'finder' menu
  2. select 'connect to server'
  3. select or enter: 'smb://soa-data.austin.utexas.edu/gis'
  4. name is 'your ut eid'
  5. password is 'your ut eid password'
  6. select 'connect'

Off-Campus Access

if you need to access Charles from home, you will need UT′s VPN solution.
you can get the VPN by:

  1. open a web browser and go to bevoware download page
  2. login with your UT EID
  3. agree to the usage policy
  4. scroll down to the version of the Cisco VPN for your operating system
  5. download and install, following any on-screen instructions

 

running the UT Cisco VPN client:

  1. run the Cisco VPN Client
  2. select connect (to the preconfigured UT VPN connection listed)
  3. login with your UT EID
  4. your computer will now act as if it was on the UT network
  5. close down the VPN connection when you are done
  6. note: it is generally not advised to run the VPN connection all the time, but to activate it periodically when you need to access UT Austin resources that are only available through the VPN, your responsible use of this resource will help ensure its availability to the UT Austin community
